MARSHALL FREDERICKS MURAL PROJECT
In 1955, Michigan artist Marshall M. Fredericks was commissioned to create a monument representing the City of Detroit.
Since its installation and dedication in 1958, Spirit of Detroit has become an icon of our community's resilience and part of the City of Detroit's official logo.
In 2024, as part of a broader Detroit-focused initiative, the Marshall M Fredericks Sculpture Museum set forth to commemorate this legacy with a riverfront mural, just steps away from the Spirit of Detroit.
Commissioning Detroit artist Peter Bernal for the new mural on Detroit’s Riverwalk at the Renaissance Center will highlight the legacy of America’s Public Sculptor — in Detroit and beyond.

Peter’s Vision:
“I want to depict in this mural a medley of a select group of Fredericks’ works. There are several reasons for this perspective. Firstly, I want to honor both his sculpture and the museum at Saginaw Valley State University dedicated to his legacy by showing highlights of his portfolio. Secondly, I accept the challenge of interpreting his sculptures through painting, by showing them as close-ups of larger works."

Peter Daniel Bernal was born in Houston, Texas, in 1978. He graduated from the Kansas City Art Institute with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in painting in 2000, followed by further education at the Rhode Island School of Design and training in printmaking and drawing in Thuringia, Germany. In 2015, Peter relocated from Weimar, Germany, to Detroit. His art deals with personal themes in relation to the philosophical, using paint as the voice.
